Scattered, light snow expected in San Juan Mountains

Low temperatures to dip into single digits through weekend

Winter storms are expected to tease the San Juan Mountains with snow throughout the weekend, dropping fewer than 5 inches above 8,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

A northwestern storm is expected to reach into Southwest Colorado on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, said meteorologist Tom Renwick. The snowstorms are “wiggles of energy” that split from a storm expected to hit northern Colorado, he said.

Snowfall accumulations in the San Juan Mountains from noon Saturday to Sunday evening are expected to total “not even an inch,” Renwick said. A Monday storm could drop 2 to 4 inches of snow above 8,000 feet, he said.

Temperatures are expected to peak around freezing throughout the weekend with single-digit lows on Saturday and Sunday, he said.

As of Thursday, snowpack in the San Juan Mountains totaled 116% of normal. Purgatory Resort reported a 44-inch snow base as of Thursday.
