Say ‘yes’ to demolishing old high school

Ballot Question 3B asks voters in the RE-1 school district for permission to use the $1.87 million set aside for a stadium to be used to abate and demolish the old high school. Money not used for this purpose will be used to update Panther Stadium.

I am voting “yes” for the following reasons:

Passage of this ballot measure will not add any tax or increase any existing tax.The old high school is a significant liability to the school district.Using these monies to abate and demolish the old high school will fulfill a promise made to voters to demolish the building upon completion of the new facility.Rather than freezing these funds indefinitely, use them now to fund the old high school demolition before this project becomes any more expensive.Preparing the old high school site for a new use gives the district an asset that can be sold to generate funds for the district, and provides our community with an asset that can add value such as a new city park or site for additional affordable housing. Please join me in voting “yes” on Ballot Question 3B.
