A stretch of the Animas River Trail between Santa Rita Park and the DoubleTree Hotel is in its final phase, as crews pour concrete and reinforce the trail’s edges.

According to city spokesman Tom Sluis, the trail is expected to reopen sometime in December.

Crews are hustling to put the final touches on the revamp, such as pouring the final layer of concrete and installing the railing alongside the trail. However, snow and cold temperatures could cause delays to setting concrete, which prevents the city from having a definitive end date, Sluis said.

“Our contractors are working hard to wrap up these last pieces, and with winter weather arriving, we’re navigating snow and freezing temperatures that can affect concrete work and safety,” Sluis said.

Sluis said the city understands the public’s eagerness to see the trail reopen after months of construction and urged patience as crews complete their work.

“We understand this is a very popular and heavily used trail and appreciate the public’s patience,” Sluis said. “We look forward to celebrating its completion soon.”
