San Juan College receives $99,999 from state grant money to improve open space

College designates 133 acres for biking, hiking

San Juan College received a grant of $99.999 from New Mexico’s Economic Development Outdoor Recreation Division to develop 133 acres of open space adjacent to Mesa Verde Elementary School in Farmington.

The grant is designated for nonmotorized biking, hiking and other improvements, including a trailhead and restrooms. Four Corners Economic Development expects on-site restrooms would significantly increase the user experience, as well as support local and regional programming, events and competitions.

NMEDD-ORD announced in a March 14 news release that it has funded 90 Trails+ projects across the state.

“The project will support healthy communities in San Juan County while contributing to New Mexico’s outdoor recreation access and economy,” 4CED stated in an email.

San Juan College’s current trail system includes 2.5 miles of single-track biking and walking trails around the campus. The bike park trail features a pump track, teeter-totter feature and various jumps and berms.
