An Ignacio family crashed an SUV on Interstate 25 just north of Trinidad on Tuesday, killing the parents and leaving two girls orphaned, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Jessica and Leon Sage were driving a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe south on the interstate with their daughters, ages 5 and 13, around 10 a.m. when the vehicle crossed the white fog line on the west side of the road and collided with two reflective posts that show drivers where pavement ends, the State Patrol said in a news release.

The girls were wearing seat belts, law enforcement said; the parents were not.

Leon, who was driving, over-corrected and crossed the interstate to the east, troopers wrote in a preliminary report. The vehicle rolled twice, the parents were ejected and the girls suffered minor injuries, according to law enforcement.

Jessica, 31, and Leon, 33, were found dead at the scene. The girls were taken to a Front Range hospital, although State Patrol spokesman Joshua Lewis said Wednesday he did not know which medical facility.

Trooper Lewis said it’s common for windows to break when a vehicle rolls. Law enforcement is investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the road and how fast it was traveling when it did, Lewis said.

Details about how far the vehicle went off the road and information about who has custody of the girls was not immediately available Wednesday afternoon.

Jessica and Leon were married in 2010, according to a Facebook page matching the family’s description, but no further information was immediately available about the couple or their children.
