Rodeo series returns to Montezuma County Fairgrounds

True Western Roundup events includes Freedom Day celebration July 3
Rodeo events are planned for the Montezuma County Fairgrounds this spring and summer.

The True Western Roundup rodeo series will return to the Montezuma County Fairgrounds for a second consecutive year.

“We has such a warm welcome last year in Cortez, we want to make it a regular event,” producer Pam Petrie said Tuesday.

The traditional rodeo series in Cortez kicks off May 15 with a junior rodeo. Adult rodeos are scheduled for June 19, July 3, July 24, July 31, Aug. 21, Sept. 18, and Oct. 9, which will be an all-women’s rodeo that includes a benefit to fight cancer.

The July 3 rodeo includes a Freedom Day celebration featuring local bands, a car race, fireworks and vendors. Local bands Vanishing Breed and Flashback will perform.

At the La Plata County Fairgrounds, the organization plans rodeos June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, and for July 7, 14, 21 and 28.

The True Western Roundup rodeo series feature all the classics, including saddle bronc riding, ranch bronc riding, breakaway roping, mutton busting, steer riding, barrel racing, team roping and bull riding.

“We’re all about preserving Western heritage with traditional cowboy events and Wild West entertainment,” Petrie said. “We are so proud to bring this rodeo to Cortez.”

The Durango-based group started putting on local rodeos in 2014.
