Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor A&S Construction Services will start a four-month pavement resurfacing project Monday on a 14.3-mile section of U.S. Highway 160, from mile marker 144 at the junction of Highway 84 in Pagosa Springs to mile marker 159, east of the Treasure Falls turnout.

The project will include:

A 2.5-inch surface treatment, with a 1-inch leveling course of asphalt mix to address imperfections and a 1.5-inch overlay of new asphalt. Guardrail upgrades. Improvements to three bridges, with new bridge rail, resurfacing, waterproofing and one expansion joint repair.Patching, milling and resurfacing of damaged sections.Truck chain station expansions.Improvements to embankments, culverts and ditches.Work will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers will encounter single-lane, alternating traffic through three work zones – including two bridges at mile markers 149 and 154 and a chain station at mile marker 157 – during the first two weeks of the project.

The speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph through the work zone.

Lane closures in mid-May will be extended and drivers will encounter 15-minute traffic stops in work areas, which are expected to be 1.5-mile sections.

A temporary width restriction will be in effect from May 14 to July 27 from mile markers 149 to 159. Traffic lanes will first be reduced to 12 feet and decrease to 11 feet in June. CDOT asks that vehicles with wide loads use caution.

The project was contracted to A&S Construction for $7.5 million and is expected to be complete by early September.
