A dense crowd packed into the main barn at the fairgrounds this past Saturday to watch the Montezuma County Junior Livestock Sale, the culminating event of the fair, which ran from July 12 to Aug. 2.
Both individuals and local businesses bought animals, with $20,000 more worth of livestock sold this year compared with last year, according to Tierney Wilson, who leads the county’s 4-H Youth Development Specialist.
“We are super lucky to have the 4H members and family that we do and for all of their hard work to go into not only these livestock projects, but also the fair overall,” Wilson said.
The total dollars in sales came out to $353,000, up from last year’s $333,000 Wilson said.
Wilson also said that enrollment in the 4-H Club increased since 2024, from 203 youths to 217.
As the fair’s auctioneer spoke in the livestock-selling tongue sometimes known as “cattle rattle” and the crowd applauded the various winning bids, skillful 4-H youths posed for photos with their animals.

Beef, Blake Romine, sold to Keesee Motor Co. for $11,000; Lamb, Kaydence Spruell sold to Merlin Jones for $3,500; Goat, Presley Oliver sold to Basin Coop for $2,500; Swine, Jace Gray, sold to ET Inc. for $4,000; Poultry, Joel West, sold to Montezuma Hearing for $2,700; Rabbit, Kacey Schmittel sold to Comfort Air for $3,400.
