Grouse meeting moved to Dove Creek High
The Bureau of Land Management’s Gunnison Sage-Grouse Environmental Impact Statement public scoping meeting on Thursday, Aug. 7, has been moved from the Dove Creek Community Center to the Dove Creek High School at 525 North Main St. The meeting is at 6 p.m., and the public is invited to the open house; a short presentation about the scoping period, EIS and EIS process; and a question-and-answer session.
Three other public scoping meetings will be held in Lakewood, Gunnison and Montrose, Colo.
Cortez schools clarify registration
Students enrolled in the Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 School District last year are already registered for the 2014-2015 school year. Schedules will be mailed on Friday, Aug. 8.
Driver cited in fatal collision on U.S. 550
A citation was issued to the driver of a car that crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. 550 on Wednesday, resulting in a collision that killed three people.
Kenneth Johnson, 60, of Delta, was issued a citation for careless driving causing death, Colorado State Patrol officials said Friday.
Sgt. Chad Martin said Johnson strayed into oncoming traffic. Johnson, driving a Toyota Avalon sedan, collided with a northbound Nissan Xterra SUV.
Authorities still are investigating what caused the Avalon to cross lanes.
Killed in the collision were Ruth Shields, 91, of Durango; John Lyle Bennett, 61, of Olathe; and Keith Duane Marksberry, 61, of Delta.
Colorado issuing driver’s licenses to immigrants
Colorado is issuing driver’s licenses and ID cards to immigrants regardless of their legal status, a dramatic change in a state that less than a decade ago passed strict immigration enforcement laws.
About 9,500 people are signed up for appointments through the next 90 days to get the documents, with more getting scheduled every day. Both people in the country illegally and those who have temporary legal status will qualify.
The demand has been tremendous since July 1, with the state’s website for appointments crashing at one point because of the traffic. So far, appointments are being handled at only five locations — Denver, Aurora, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and Grand Junction.
Cliven Bundy: ‘Lord told me’ to do it
Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy claims the April confrontation between the federal government and his armed supporters was part of an age-old spiritual battle between good and evil.
Bundy, a Mormon, told an Independent American Party gathering in St. George, Utah, on Saturday that God provided him inspiration in the showdown over cattle in Bunkerville, Nev., about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
“The Lord told me ... if (the local sheriff doesn’t) take away these arms from federal agents, we the people will have to face these arms in a civil war. He said, ‘This is your chance to straighten this thing up,’” Bundy said, according to The Spectrum of St. George.
