Read your Empire Electric bills closely

I lived in Dolores for two years. I paid my electric bill on time each month, leaving a zero balance with Empire Electric.

Upon moving, I received a final bill of over $400. I was advised that new equipment had been installed and was not working properly; the “turtle”, which is to send a meter reading to Empire Electric, did not function properly. There are no actual meter readings conducted as there is not enough staffing.

As you may know, Empire Electric is a co-op, which means they are not regulated. This also means that consumers are at their mercy concerning their equipment, cost, and if they conduct business ethically.

However, the Colorado attorney general’s website allows consumers to document instances such as this. As the number of complaints increases, an investigation may take place.

I urge all consumers of Empire Electric to monitor their electric bills closely, read your own meter monthly to compare with your bill and file a complaint if you find discrepancies.
