With kids heading back to school and summer winding down, Purgatory Resort, will now move to operating its summer attractions on weekends only beginning Sunday.

Purgatory will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, Aug. 20-Oct. 2, plus Labor Day.

“This is the same summer schedule that we posted at the start of the season and have followed for the past several years,” said Amanda Anderson, Purgatory’s director of marketing. “It is primarily based on when students in our region head back to school and allows our team to begin preparing for the upcoming winter season.”

The mountain, however, will continue offering events and music in addition to lift-accessed mountain biking, its alpine slide and Inferno mountain coaster for visitors.

Free live music will continue at the mountain every weekend.

Upcoming events at Purgatory include its Mushroom and Wine Dinner Aug. 19, a motorcycle hill climb Sept. 4, where motorcycles will attempt to ride straight up the mountain, and the 12.2-mile Mountain Marmot Trail Run up and down the mountain’s singletrack trails Sept. 24.

Purgatory will also host several more bike races.

The Downhill Rockies race series will take place this weekend, testing bikers on the mountain’s World Cup track. In addition to the downhill race, the event will also feature a “Warlords of Downhill Costume Parade” down one of Purgatory’s easier trails at the end of the weekend.

The mountain’s Trail Party Enduro will take place Sept. 11. In that competition, bikers can ride the downhill segments in any order, as many times as they want, and only their fastest laps will count.

The USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Championships, meanwhile, will return to Purgatory for the second year in a row on Oct. 13-16.
