The shutdown took place Monday afternoon

Power to Empire Electric’s Cortez substation was restored on Monday evening around 6:55 p.m. following an emergency shutdown of the station earlier that day.

According to the Empire Electric Association via a post on Facebook, the substation was shut down due to arcing in a switch. Impacted areas were the west side of Cortez, as well of some areas north and south of the town.

The estimated time of repair at the time of the shut down, around 3:40 p.m., was 7 p.m. During the shutdown, the EEA office was closed, as the substation also powers the EEA office.

Around 3:42 p.m. the Cortez Police Department issued a statement via Crime Watch, informing the public that some traffic lights may not be functional during the outage.

At 4:25 p.m., EEA shared that two of the circuits had power restored, but that they were still working on restoring power to the remaining circuits.

By 6:55 p.m., power was fully restored.
