Popular Dolores River Festival will return this year

Festival that features bands and free raft rides was canceled the past two years because of pandemic

Organizers announced that the popular Dolores River Festival will return this year after a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic.

The all-day music festival is set for June 4 at Joe Rowell Park starting at 10 a.m. It is organized by Greater Dolores Action, a community group that sponsors outdoor events and environmental projects.

There will be bands, two stages, free raft rides, local beers and food, vendors and summertime activities including a boating parade.

“We’re so happy to be back celebrating the river and live music. It is a breath of fresh air,” said Scott Clow, event organizer and vice chairman of Greater Dolores Action.

Festival attendees dance to the music of Funkdafari at a previous Dolores River Festival.

The festival music director is Aaron Lemay, of Inner Orbit Sound System. Susan Lisak, of the Dolores Chamber of Commerce, is organizing the vendors and marketing.

Lisak said she often was asked when the festival would return.

“The community really missed it, and getting this back on track feels like a light at the end of the tunnel,” she said.

Dolores River Boating Advocates will provide guided raft rides, outfitted with new safety equipment.

Camping will be available at the park, and friendly, leashed dogs will be allowed.

Bands are being booked by Inner Orbit, and a music lineup will be announced closer to the event, Clow said.

Fundraising for the music festival takes place during the Dolores Mountain Film in November. Like many fundraisers during the pandemic, attendance was down, Clow said.

“We’re rebuilding and are optimistic,” he said.

The Dolores River Festival typically draws 1,500 to 2000 attendees. It is in its 17th year.

Fort Lewis College conducted two economic-impact studies on the festival, and GDA plans two present the findings to the Dolores Town Board soon.
