Several calls were made to dispatch about a vehicle swerving all over the road by Burger King. An officer noticed a vehicle that matched the description in the parking lot. The officer contacted the driver and asked him where he was coming from and where he was going. The man said he came from Dolores to pick up his wife from work. The officer asked the man how much he had to drink because he could smell an unknown alcoholic beverage. The man said he had nothing to drink. While the officer was speaking with the man he observed a small child lying down on the bench seat between a car seat and the driver. The officer asked the man to step out of the vehicle and asked him to perform roadside maneuvers. The man did not perform them satisfactorily. The officer arrested the man for child abuse and a DUI. Police transported the child’s mother from her place of employment; the child and the truck were released to her.
Thursday, Aug. 22
Police reported to West Slope Liquors in reference to an assault. A man said he had stopped at a stop sign and another vehicle passed him yelling that he almost hit their vehicle. The man said the other vehicle parked by West Slope Liquors so he went and asked the occupants what the problem was. The man said a woman, approximately 40 years old, got out of the pickup and walked with a cane up to his vehicle. He said the female told him to get out of his truck if he wanted to dance. The man said he told the woman that he was not going to get out of his vehicle. He said the woman then reached through his window and scratched the side of his face. The man said he would not press charges if the woman and her vehicle were found. Police were unable to locate the woman.
Friday, Aug. 23
Two pit bulls were running at large and may have bitten a child. One of the dogs had been caught, and an officer saw the other pit bull in an alley but was unable to catch it. The owner of the dogs arrived and took both of the dogs back home. A juvenile female told the officer the pit bulls always get out and fight with her dogs through the fence. She said she heard them fighting and went outside to shoo them away when one of them bit her on the hand. The juvenile’s mother said the dogs are always running at large and she wants something done about it, she was very upset that her daughter was bit. The man was given a summons for dogs running at large.
Friday, Aug. 23
Police went to Brubaker Apartments in reference to a break-in. When police arrived, a woman said her wallet had been taken out of her car and her stuff was thrown around. She said she was missing $40 from her wallet. Later another woman called saying her car was also broken into but nothing was stolen; items were just moved around. Since there were no suspects or leads the case is closed.
Sunday, Aug. 25
Police responded to the intersection of South Madison and East Fourth Street in reference to a small child and a dog walking around by themselves. The reporting party had placed the toddler in her vehicle because it was pouring rain outside and it was cold. The toddler was wearing a purple short sleeve shirt and a diaper that appeared to have urine in it. The officer picked up the child and put her in the backseat of his patrol car. The officer asked the toddler if that was her puppy, she said “puppy,” and the dog jumped into the car and refused to leave her side. An hour and 20 minutes later, another officer who was still in the area where the toddler was found located her grandfather, who was walking around searching for her. The officer took the toddler and her dog to Madison Street where her grandfather was. The grandfather said he was in the shower when his granddaughter had left the house. He said he started to look around for his granddaughter and called her parents. The officer asked why he did not call 911 when he noticed the toddler missing. He said because he did not want to get in trouble. The grandfather was given a summons for child abuse and was released.
Tuesday, Aug. 27
Police reported to South Harrison Street in reference to a small child found walking alone near that area. When police arrived the woman who found her said a man had walked her over to her house asking if she was her child. The woman said she would watch the toddler until police arrived. The toddler only had on a long t-shirt and a diaper with urine in it. On the way to the police station the officer stopped to talk to the man that had found the toddler. The man said he noticed nobody was with her so he went and got her out of the street because she was all over the street. At the police station the officer called Social Services. When a Social Services representative arrived, he identified the child and told the police that her grandfather had just been cited for child abuse two days prior for the same thing. Then a man showed up at the police station stating that his child was missing. The man said he and the toddler’s mother were sleeping and her grandfather was supposed to be watching her. He said they both work nights so it’s hard to be awake all day. The man said his daughter knows how to open the doors and they are working on getting new locks for the doors. The police reported to the man’s residence to speak with the mother of the toddler and the grandfather. The mother said that it was all of their responsibility to take care of the toddler but it was mostly the grandfather’s responsibility. The grandfather said he was in the back securing the gate so the toddler did not get out and then went back inside to take a nap. When asked if it was his responsibility to watch the toddler he said, “Maybe, maybe not.” The grandfather was issued another summons for child abuse.
