Plewe holds lead at state golf meet; Panthers team sits in third place

Montezuma-Cortez fires strong opening holes, sits seven shots off lead

ELIZABETH – Montezuma-Cortez junior Thayer Plewe is halfway to the goal that eluded him a year ago. On Spring Valley Golf Course in Day 1 of the 3A State Championships, Plewe shot an electric five-under par 67 to carry a two-stroke lead into the final round.

Plewe blistered the front nine with five birdies, to go along with two bogies to go out in 33, before playing a bogie-free back nine in two-under 34.

Teammates Vince Lopez, a freshman, and sophomore Kaden Huff posted very solid rounds of 80 and 83, respectively, to help the Panthers to a Day 1 total of 230.

The Panthers’ team score has them seven shots behind leaders Aspen, and three behind Lutheran (227).

Day 2 of the 36-hole event will be Tuesday, Oct. 5 from Spring Valley Golf Course in Elizabeth.
