Pedestrian hit in crosswalk on Main Street

A young male was struck by a large van while crossing the street July 28

A pedestrian suffered a serious head injury and was flown to a hospital after being hit by a vehicle Friday evening while in a crosswalk on Cortez’s Main Street.

The pedestrian was unconscious but breathing when police arrived to the scene in the 1300 block of Main Street about 8 p.m., according to a police report by Sgt. Rogelio Maynard. His name was redacted from the report.

The victim’s father, whose name also was redacted, told Maynard that the victim and his brother walked across Main Street to Taco Bell to get an application while waiting for a table at J Fargo's. While returning to J Fargo’s, the two males were in the crosswalk in the eastbound lane of traffic when the victim was struck by “a large van,” according to the police report.

“It should be noted that this intersection is equipped with a light that flashes if activated,” Maynard stated. “This indicates to drivers that someone may be in the intersection and to proceed with caution.”

Maynard reported that he observed “what appeared to be slide marks through the dirt and dust of the road.” These marks indicated that the victim was dragged 37 feet from the point of impact.

The victim was flown out of Southwest Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

James Wilson, 19, was identified as the driver of the GMC van that hit the victim. Wilson reported that he was driving at the 35 mph speed limit. He said he had dropped his glasses and reached down to retrieve them when he struck the pedestrian.

The van had a broken headlight and damaged left corner of the windshield. Maynard determined that contact with the windshield caused the victim’s head injury.

Wilson was cited with careless driving causing injury and failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. He is scheduled to appear in Montezuma County Combined Courts Aug. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
