Panthers girls soccer ends 2024 season with draw

Montezuma-Cortez High School Panthers.

Honoring five seniors playing in their final match for the Montezuma-Cortez girls soccer team, the Panthers closed out their spring season with a scoreless draw against Pagosa Springs on Saturday.

Up front, the Panthers generated chances in their home finale – dominating the final 15 minutes – but couldn’t break through.

The Panthers finished the 2024 campaign at 3-5-3 for third place in the 3A Southwest League.

“We dealt with a lot of adversity, with injuries especially, but we really found girls who were willing to step and take on roles that they may not have been quite as familiar with,” first-year Panthers coach Melody Harris said.

Defenders Alyssa Brittain and Grace Darrin, midfielder Anna Jensen, and strikers Mikayla Puett and Janae Boyd, all saw their high school careers come to an end.

Over the course of the spring season, Montezuma-Cortez outscored opponents 22-17, with Brittain and Darrin anchoring the back four.

The Panthers tallied a combined record of 20-15-5 over the past three seasons, winning a pair of league titles along the way.

“These girls really understood that they were needing to have a positive approach with each other, and they were able to develop the mentality to be able to work as a cohesive unit,” Harris said.
