Pagosa wrestlers take Butch Melton crown; M-CHS finishes fifth

M-CHS places 5th; Dolores, 7th

Pagosa Springs High School continued its wrestling dominance with a team victory at the Butch Melton Invitational, hosted by Ignacio High School on Saturday in Ignacio.

The Pirates piled up 212.5 points to top Cedaredge’s 187.5 and Aztec’s 155.5 points.

Bayfield finished fourth with 95 points, Montezuma-Cortez was fifth with 54.5 points and Durango was sixth with 47.5 points.

Dolores placed seventh with 35 points, Mancos was eighth with 25.5 points, Dove Creek finished 10th with 19 points and the host Bobcats were 11th with 17 points.

There were 17 teams at the meet.

Bayfield’s John Foutz won the 195-pound bracket. The Wolverines got second-place finishes from Garret Beebe at 138 pounds and Jake Sandrey, and Daniel Westbrook was third at 220.

Montezuma-Cortez’s Matthew Broughton won the 138-pound bracket. Kael Buffington and Anthony Abeyta placed third for the Panthers at 106 and 120, respectively.

Durango’s Owen Eicher placed second at 106, Kaleb McMunn was second at 160 and Rashaad Liggins placed third at 182.

Dove Creek’s Rhett Quackenbush placed third at 113, and LaRissa Randolph was third in the girls 113-pound class.

Dolores’ Bryan Escarcega placed third at 285.
