National recording artists Images plans Cortez concert

The Journal

The group Images plans to perform in Cortez on Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium.

Images was formed in the early 1980s by Lee Bartley and Rich Sallee as a light jazz quartet. The duo released their first album in 1983, then had two CD releases for Redstone Records, two CD releases for Fahrenheit Records, a CD release for MCA Universal Masterseries and a CD release for Capitol Records.

The MCA and Capitol releases charted Nos. 8 and 9 nationally in radio airplay in the U.S.

Images’ improvisational light jazz incorporates styles similar to Earl Klugh, Spyro Gyro, Dave Grusin, David Sanborn, Pat Metheny and Kenny G and incorporates more melody than bebop and swing jazz do today.

When Bartley and Sallee formed the group, Bartley was the principal composer. As the band continued its 16-year-run, both horn players and the bassist contributed original compositions. The concert will feature songs piano, bass, drums, alto-tenor-soprano saxophones, wind synthesizer, Nepalese wooden flute, flute and alto flute. Joining the band will be Randy Chavez on guitar, who has performed with the band on several CD releases. Mike Marlier, director of drum set studies at the Lamont School of Music at Denver University will perform on drums. Joe Anderies and Bob Rebholz, teachers at the Colorado Conservatory For The Jazz Arts in Denver, will play horns.

Images has performed at the Catalina Jazz Festival with Earl Klugh, the West Palm Beach Jazz Festival, The Riverbend Music Festival, The Breckenridge Jazz Festival and the Telluride Jazz Festival. It has opened concerts for The Rippingtons and The Yellowjackets.

This will be the locals concert for SouthWest Colorado Concerts for the 2017-18 season. All tickets will be $10, and season-ticket holders will be admitted free. The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m., Nov. 19 at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium.
