My attempt at disagreeing better

Thanks to a recent letter writer for your letter to the editor, “Trump is doing what we voted for,” (Journal, June 25). I respect your right to free speech, even though we disagree. We need to be civil in our discourse. Republican Gov. Spencer Cox (R-UT) created an initiative called “Disagree Better.” I hope to reflect that aspiration.

In my opinion, Trump’s immigration policy is characterized by cruelty. It makes me sad to think that is what you voted for.

The Statue of Liberty welcomes immigrants. Nearly all of us are descended from immigrants. We have a long history of legal immigration as you noted. Excluding serious criminals is appropriate.

The term “illegals” is used to unfairly disparage people. Most who enter our country “illegally” have not committed any morally reprehensible crime. What would you do if you were in their shoes? They are simply seeking a better life. Most are here to work and support their families; most are not “freeloaders.” The business about “murders and rapists” is Trump propaganda.

You also seem to have a problem with Due Process. Please read the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. The Due Process clauses are not just for “Americans.” The Due Process clauses apply to both citizens and noncitizens.

If we didn’t have immigrants to work in agriculture, hospitality and construction, those industries would not be able to provide the products and services we need and enjoy.

The suggestion that those of us who disagree with your point of view hate America is untrue and offensive. It’s also Trump propaganda.
