Construction starts early May, and will wrap up in September

At 7 a.m. on Monday, May 5, a sidewalk improvement project will begin downtown Mancos, on Grand Avenue and Main Street.

“Work includes over 1,000 feet of new sidewalk and installation of 64 new ramps along eight blocks, complaint with the Americans with Disabilities Act,” according to a news release from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

There will also be upgrades to driveway ramps and stormwater drainage systems, the news release said.

Specifically, at the intersection of Main and Mesa Streets, “inlets will be replaced and stormwater pipes and drainage will receive upgrades,” it said.

CDOT is spearheading the project, and has worked in conjunction with the town of Mancos and contractor Mortan Electric Inc. to make it happen.

“The town is excited about the project, and we are very grateful to CDOT for their efforts to improve safety and walkability in town,” said Mancos Town Administrator Heather Alvarez in an email.

Lisa Schwantes, Southwest Colorado’s regional communications manager at CDOT, added that CDOT regularly works to “enhance safety for every type of transportation.”

“CDOT partners with the local agencies to cooperatively implement strategies leading to projects (like this one in Mancos) that eliminate fatalities and serious injuries,” Schwantes wrote in an email.

While construction is underway, motorists and pedestrians should expect shoulder and sidewalk closures.

Work is slated to conclude by late September.
