Members of the Montezuma County 4-H Program have once again claimed all three district officer positions, continuing a streak that now spans two years.

Montezuma County 4-H’s Zane Herrmann was elected president, Bryson Dixon vice president and Noelle Walden secretary. The elections took place this spring at the San Juan Basin Leadership Camp in Hesperus.

To be considered for a position, candidates must give a speech, answer questions and promote their candidacy. The district includes four counties – Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma and Archuleta – and each county receives two votes.

Herrmann is an eighth-grader who has been in 4-H for six years. He participates in outdoor adventures and swine projects. Dixon is a junior in high school with nine years in the program. He shows market sheep, breeding beef and market beef. Walden is a sophomore who has been in 4-H for three years, and her focus is in vet science.

Tierney Wilson, Montezuma CSU 4-H youth development extension agent, told The Journal that this year, the Montezuma County 4-H program has 239 members who participate in a variety of projects ranging “from cakes to cows.”

Wilson shared that this year’s highlights include an international trip to the Netherlands and Belgium to study agriculture, as well as summer activities such as weaving, thank-you card making, gardening and other workshops. A junior camp will take place in July.

Currently, senior 4-H members are preparing to compete at the State Conference in Livestock Quiz Bowl, livestock judging and horse speech, and the program’s Annual Tour De 4-H & FFA is scheduled for Oct. 10.
