Montezuma-Cortez sweeps double-header against Centauri

Panthers will face 13-2 Durango on Tuesday

The Montezuma-Cortez Panthers swept a double-header with the Centauri Falcons in Intermountain League play Saturday in Cortez.

In Game 1, the Panthers struck first in the third inning with one run, then scored five more in the fourth and fifth innings before exploding for six runs in the sixth inning to win, 12-2. Centauri scored both its runs in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Jake Blackmer led the Panthers at the plate with three hits in four at-bats, two RBIs and one run. Senior Dylan Kibel score three times on two hits, and posted one RBI.

Senior Panthers pitcher Ernie Padilla struck out six batters in 5.1 innings pitched and allowed two runs and five hits.

In Game 2, the Panthers again struck first, with one run in the second inning before adding three in the third and three in the fifth to win, 7-2. The Falcons scored both their runs in the fifth inning.

Senior Ty Blackmer led all hitters with two hits in three at-bats, including a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs.

On the mound, Ty Blackmer struck out 11 batters in 5.2 innings pitched. He allowed three hits and two runs.

Next up for the 8-6 Panthers is a non-league matchup at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Cortez against 13-2 Durango .
