Twenty-six students from Montezuma-Cortez High School have been selected for the Fort Lewis College Honor Choir.

They will perform in a concert at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the FLC Community Concert Hall.

A few middle school students and 13 high school students auditioned for the all-state choir.

The results of the auditions will not be released until around Thanksgiving, according to director Marla Sitton.

To audition, student must perform a number of tasks to be considered for the prestigious group.

“They have to be able to do solos and site reading and oral recall and part singing and rhythm reading,” Sitton said. “If they make an honor choir, in February they get to travel to Denver to participate in all-state choir at the Denver convention center with kids from across the state of Colorado.”

According to Sitton, what makes the high school choir so successful is that if students are auditioning, they already know her as their director.

“It is generally pretty successful,” Sitton said. “It is different every year, but I think part of what helps the high school program is the fact that I have good numbers at the middle school. Since I am my own feeder, the kids kind of know what to expect, so they either really love it or they really hate it and make their choices accordingly.”

Both choirs and some band members will perform at M-CHS on Nov. 14 for their fall recital.
