Montezuma-Cortez schools get additional security after national threats

TikTok denies threats were issued on its platform

Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 bolstered police presence in its schools Friday after alleged threats of national concern were issued on social media, according to a 10:25 a.m. press release.

“The Board of Education and the Superintendent wanted you to know we have additional police presence in our building today due to nationwide threats that were made on social media. We are taking safety precautions while maintaining our daily educational experience,” the release said.

The alleged threats were suspected to have been proclaimed on video-based social media platform TikTok.

In a series of statements posted to its Twitter account, beginning Thursday afternoon, TikTok’s communications team reported that it hadn’t discovered evidence of violent threats toward schools on its network.

Videos discussing the rumor, however; had been found, the team reported Friday morning.

The most recent tweet, posted at 9:32 a.m., said the FBI, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and local authorities had cleared the social media site for credible threats.

Posts spreading misinformation were being removed, it said.
