Tom Burris gave board 60 days to find his replacement

The Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 Board of Education is accepting applications for superintendent. Applications are due by noon Sept. 29.

The salary ranges from $155,000 to $180,000, based on experience. The start date is flexible.

Superintendent Tom Burris announced his resignation at the board’s September meeting, citing a promise to board President Sheri Noyes. Both Burris and Noyes said he planned to leave the district when Noyes completed her term.

Noyes will leave the board in November. Burris has served as superintendent for three years.

“Mr. Burris mentioned that he would ‘see me out’ at my last meeting. Meaning, when I go, he was going too,” Noyes said in an email to The Journal. “So, that was his reason for his intended early retirement/resignation.”

Burris gave the board 60 days to find a replacement but said he will stay until July 2026, when his contract ends, if needed.
