Missing person dies in crash in river near Dolores

Helicopter spotted vehicle Thursday afternoon; occupant found dead

A car crash involving a single fatality was discovered in the Dolores River off Colorado Highway 145 Thursday afternoon, reports Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin.

A gray 2016 Silverado pickup was spotted by helicopter about 4 p.m. in the river at mile marker 29, near Taylor Creek. The vehicle was not visible from the road, about 15 miles north of Dolores.

The vehicle matches the description of one driven by a person reported missing from Mountain Village Feb. 22, Nowlin said. Positive identification of the victim is pending an investigation and notification of next of kin.

It was not clear when the crash occurred, Nowlin said.

A Colorado State Patrol investigator was on his way to the crash scene Thursday afternoon, said Master Trooper Gary Cutler.

The highway was closed at 5 p.m. in both directions to allow for the investigation and extraction of the vehicle, according to law enforcement. It reopened shortly before 6:30 p.m.

Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including Dolores Volunteer Fire Department, Rico Fire Department, Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, and Montezuma County Coroner. Southwest Health System ambulance also responded.
