An infant who went missing last week from Delta County was found safe in Durango a day after the child’s mother was admitted to emergency care with an arrow stuck in her buttocks, according to law enforcement.

The Durango Police Department found the 10-month-old girl with Dustin Alt, 34, of Delta County early Friday at the Super 8 Motel in Durango, said Cmdr. Ray Shupe. Alt was arrested on accusations of violating a restraining order meant to keep him away from the child, DPD’s spokesman said.

Alt’s arrest stemmed from Delta County, where the Sheriff’s Office accused him of domestic violence, three violations of protection orders, a bail bond violation and child abuse, said Sheriff Mark Taylor, in an interview Monday with The Durango Herald.

The Sheriff’s Office also accused Alt of violating a custody order “relating to parental responsibilities,” meaning he “had no parental responsibilities with child,” Taylor said.

Camyo Cowger, the infant’s 21-year-old mother, “was being somewhat uncooperative” on Thursday morning after she was admitted to Delta County Memorial Hospital’s emergency room, the sheriff said. Law enforcement is investigating her relationship with Alt and how an arrow became stuck in her buttocks, according to the Delta County Sheriff’s Office.

Durango police impounded the vehicle Alt was driving and took him to the La Plata County Jail where he remained as of Monday morning.

Formal charges had not been filed as of Monday. Law enforcement accuses Alt of felony and misdemeanor crimes. He is being held with no bond.

The Delta County sheriff declined to release the infant girl’s name and said she is safe in the custody of family.
