Missing hunter from Mancos is found unharmed

Search focused on Dunton and Groundhog areas

A missing hunter being sought by Dolores County and Rico Fire search and rescue crews was found Monday evening, reports the Dolores County sheriff’s office.

The man, whose name was not released, was found unharmed, but the location was not revealed.

The search was organized Monday morning in the Dunton and Groundhog area after the man’s father called concerned that his son could be in trouble. The missing hunter, who is reportedly from Mancos and in his mid-20s, was last heard from since Saturday.

Fifteen search-and-rescue volunteers from the county and Rico searched for the man’s dark SUV in order to narrow the search area, said Dolores County Undersheriff Tim Rowell Monday.

Searchers encountered on-and-off blizzard conditions and wet and slippery roads as they fanned out in vehicles across the vast area.

Rowell said a helicopter or search plane was being considered to help find the man, but then he was located.
