Mesa Verde entrance to get bridge work

Traffic may be diverted onto the exit ramp

Construction on the overpass to Mesa Verde National Park above U.S. Highway 160 may divert traffic throughout June, Colorado Department of Transportation Communications Manager Lisa Schwantes said.

Crews will be doing preventative maintenance work on the overpass bridge, including sandblasting, power washing and painting, Schwantes said. Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The work will help protect the bridge and extend its life, she said.

Traffic may be diverted, but will never completely stop, Schwantes said. If traffic lanes on Highway 160 are closed, traffic will be diverted onto the exit ramp, and drivers will be able to get back onto the highway using the on-ramp. Drivers also will always be able to enter the national park.

Schwantes said drivers should make sure to pay attention in the area as the work may require them to slow down. The $300,000 project should be finished by the end of July, she said.
