Farmington Police Department is investigating a shooting over the Memorial Day weekend at the Farmington Inn on Scott Avenue.

Police were dispatched to the motel around 4:45 p.m. May 28, regarding a shooting. Upon arrival they located Joshua Watkins, 37, who was wanted on a felony warrant out of the Eleventh Judicial District Court.

Watkins reportedly violated probation, which he was serving after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a controlled substance. The charge was from Dec. 21, 2022, and he pleaded guilty Feb. 24. Before police took Watkins into custody, they questioned him about the shooting.

Police also questioned the victim, who was transported to the hospital by an unidentified family member.

“We interviewed the victim, who stated he asked a man for a cigarette outside the hotel. The man aggressively said, ‘Who do you think you're talking to?’ He reached into a backpack and retrieved a handgun, placing the barrel a few inches from his left arm, and fired,” police spokesperson Shanice Gonzales said.

The investigation into the case is ongoing, as no arrests have been made, according to Gonzales.
