Memorial Day events honor veterans

Ceremonies planned in Cortez, Mancos and Dolores

Several local events will honor veterans this weekend for Memorial Day.

In Mancos, people are invited to meet Sunday at noon at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5231, 136 W. Grand Ave. Veterans will be visiting cemeteries and placing flowers at graves.

On Monday at 11 a.m., people are invited to meet at the Cedar Grove Cemetery, south of Mancos on Road 41. There will be a ceremony honoring veterans at the cemetery. Afterward, people will return to the VFW for a flag ceremony.

Memorial Day will start in Cortez with a breakfast for veterans at 7 a.m. at the American Legion, 320 N. Harrison St. Before the breakfast, people are invited to meet at the Cortez Cemetery to place flowers at veterans’ grave sites. The American Legion will be open all day on Memorial Day.

After the breakfast, veterans will hold ceremonies at the Dolores Cemetery and Rico Cemetery.
