Mancos track teams shine at SJBL meet

Bluejays boys finish first; six win individual events

Competing at the San Juan Basin League meet in Ignacio on May 1, Mancos High School enjoyed rousing success as several members of both teams performed well and the boys’ team captured the league title.

Among the top finishers for the boys were Anthony Medina, Breccen Morelli, Jake McKie and Caden Showalter, who all won both of their individual events.

Medina finished first in the 200-meter dash (24.26) and the long jump (19 feet, 8½ inches), Morelli finished first in the 400-meter dash (53.59) and the 110-meter hurdles (18.35), McKie won the 800-meter run (2:04.27) and the 1600-meter run (4:43.93), and Showalter won the discus (127 feet, 10 inches) and the shot put (46 feet, 3 inches).

Also winning individual events for the Bluejays were Caden Galloway, who placed first in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), and Griff Huver, who finished first in the triple jump (36 feet, 5 inches). Galloway finished second in the triple jump (36 feet, 1 inch) and Huver finished second in the long jump (19 feet, 3 inches).

Other Top 3 finishers for the Mancos boys’ team included Zane Wilson, who crossed the line second in the 3200-meter run (11:48.27), Hunter Hoover, who placed second in the high jump (5 feet, 7 inches), Cameron Fury, who placed third in the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), John Lund, who finished third in the 3200-meter run (12:00.84), and Simon Kearns, who placed third in the 1600-meter run (4:56.67).

The Mancos boys finished first overall as a team with 210 points. Bayfield High School placed second with 192 points, and Del Norte finished third with 148 points. Eleven total teams competed in the meet.

On the girls’ side, Mancos was led by Grace Manning, who placed second in the 400-meter dash (1:04.99) and second in the 800-meter run (2:38.78). Kylie Guiles crossed the line second in the 1600-meter run (7:13.37) and third in the 3200-meter run (17:28.25), while Kristen Fogel placed fourth in both the shot put (27 feet, 8 inches) and the discus (82 feet, 11 inches).

The Mancos girls’ team finished seventh overall, with 61 points. Del Norte won the girls’ portion of the 11-team meet with 152 points.

Next up for both Mancos teams will be The Pueblo Twilight on May 4. Both teams will then compete in the Terry Alley Invitational in Pagosa Springs on May 5.
