At its first meeting of 2026, the Mancos RE-6 school board congratulated midyear graduates, heard about student projects and received updates from the mill levy oversight committee.
At the meeting’s opening, board President Tim Hunter congratulated Mancos’ midyear graduates, who may walk with their peers at the spring ceremony.
The midyear graduates are Madison Daves, Emany Fry, Zoey Gilstrap, Evan Goff, Brooke Jabour, Alexis Lyons and Colten Vannest.
The board celebrated School Board Recognition Month before receiving a report from student board member Rhett Brown. The other student board member, Greta Thompson, was not present.
Brown gave the board a brief update on a survey he and Thompson distributed to fellow students. He said they are meeting with students to determine next steps before presenting the findings to the board.
There was no strategic plan discussion at the meeting. The board will resume discussion in February, focusing on the “healthy community” goal from the Student Wellness and Behavior team.
The board learned that the budget is balanced and ready for approval, with a student average of 473.1, before moving on to the superintendent’s report.
In her report, Superintendent Audrey Hazleton congratulated the 21 students heading to the regional science fair on Feb. 4, along with all students who participated.
Hazleton also reported on the most recent meeting of the mill levy oversight committee. The committee examined how different salary schedules work and “where we are in comparison to the region and to the state.”
At its next meeting, the committee will review different salary schedule models and present its findings to the board and staff to gather feedback. The committee aims to present a proposed salary and wage schedule at the board’s Monday, March 2, work session, followed by a final salary and wage schedule for board approval at the Monday, April 20, regular meeting.
The board was also invited to the upcoming Wizard of Oz play, scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, and Friday, Jan. 30. Members were also informed that the district’s engineering students will present their project at Durango’s Snowdown Parade on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
The next Mancos school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m.
