Kilgore

The Journal

The Mancos Public Library will kick off a series of free community events with a talk called “New Discoveries Along Old Trails” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Kilgore American Indian Art, 100 West Grand Ave., in Mancos.

Gallery owner Kelly Kilgore, who has been an appraiser for the Heard Museum in Phoenix for more than 25 years, will talk about her history with Navajo and Hopi cultures and her experience selling authentic Native American art.

Kilgore’s parents purchased a trading post in the 1950s on the Navajo reservation in Arizona, which became known for its authentic Native American artwork. She and her mother opened a gallery in 1981 in Scottsdale, Arizona, where they acquired more extensive collections of historic and contemporary indigenous art, and she eventually opened Kilgore American Indian Art in Mancos.
