The Mancos Public Library kicked off its celebration of Black History Month with an “elegant and inclusive” display created by resident Gloria Thatch‑Woody, who is of African American descent.

“Her thoughtful assemblage illustrates many of the important people and times throughout Black history in America,” said Midge Kirk, director of adult programs at the library.

The display features key moments in Black history and includes a photo of Thatch‑Woody and her husband, Roger.

Thatch‑Woody, who is in her 80s, told the library that she and her husband’s interracial marriage was “unusual and not widely accepted” when they married almost 50 years ago.

“I have witnessed many people deeply moved as they make their way through the display, not just a cursory look, but really taking the time to absorb what they are seeing,” Kirk said. “We are deeply grateful to Ms. Gloria Thatch‑Woody for bringing Black history to life during the month of February.”

Kirk also announced upcoming programs at the library.

On Sunday, March 1, at 9:30 a.m., the library will host a two‑hour event titled “Co‑Create a New Consciousness.” The session will include Pranayam, Kundalini yoga, meditation and additional activities.

On Saturday, March 28, the library will hold its annual celebration of women in the community in honor of Women’s History Month. Additional details will be released later.
