Mancos enters new century

My father, Vernon Ellis, was born on Sept. 22, 1907. I wanted to do it for my mother, Fern Decker Ellis, but there was no microfilm for 1913 or 1914. So I'll look at what happened the week my father was born.

Friday, Sept. 27, 1907

Uncle Joe Sheek is down from the area of Hesperus Peak this week to look after his threshing. Uncle Joe has been putting in the summer doing easement on his numerous mines just as he has been doing for the past twenty years. (Joseph Sparks Sheek came to Mancos in 1879. He served as a captain in the Civil War. He passed away in November 1909.)

Considerably more than the ordinary freight has been hauled out of Mancos this week, both from the mercantile companies and from the depot.

John Schultz, a brother of Mrs. A.F. Roessler, arrive the first of the week on a visit. He has finished assessment work on his group of claims. (Albert Roessler passed away in 1947 and his wife passed away in 1968.)

Guilett Brothers, flour wholesale and retail. (The Guilett flour mill burned to the ground in 1930.) George Bauer Bank, the oldest bank in the county, established in 1881, transacts general banking business. (George Bauer passed away in 1905. His home was bought by Dr. Trotter in 1919.) Leonard H. Clark M.D., surgeon for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. My office is on Grand Avenue. (He was a member of the school board and was the county health officer.)

An accident of a serious nature happened in the Webber neighborhood Wednesday. As Mrs. Laura C. Bell, Miss Olie Bell and Miss Cora Zufelt were driving by the Decker's place in a spring wagon their team became frightened at a scraper beside the road and ran away. The vehicle struck a tree and the occupants were thrown violently to the ground. Mrs. Zufelt had a very hard fall and remained unconscious for several minutes, while the other two sustained severe bruises. All are in a fair way to recovery. The spring wagon was completely whacked.

Johnny Roessler and George Wagner took a few days outing in the hills this week. (John Roessler married Flora Wagner in 1906. He worked for George Bauer when he first came to Mancos. George Wagner came to Mancos in 1894 and passed away in 1908.)

T.J. Freeman, father of this editor is very ill at his home four miles below town. (Thomas Jefferson Freeman served in the Civil War under generals Lee, Stonewall and Jackson. He came to Mancos in 1904 and passed away in October 1907. (One month after this issue of the Mancos Times-Tribune.)

Born to Mr. and Mrs. William Ellis on Wednesday, September 25th a boy. Mother and child (Vernon Ellis) are doing well.
