Boyer graduates from Fort Lewis

Kalyn Boyer, of Mancos, graduated from Fort Lewis College on Saturday, Dec. 20. Boyer received a bachelor's degree with a major in Biology - General Biology option. More than 200 students participated in the December Commencement ceremony.

Learn how to help Habitat for Humanity

Montezuma County Habitat for Humanity invites all interested area residents to a volunteer recruitment event, 6 p.m. Feb. 12, at First United Method Church on Park and Empire.

Free legal clinic in Mancos

A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 2 to 4 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Mancos Public Library, 211 West First St., Mancos.

By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Walk-ins are welcome, and everyone will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upcoming dates in 2015 are Feb. 12; March 12; April 9; May 14; June 11; July 9; Aug. 13; Sept. 10; Oct. 8; Nov. 12; and Dec. 10.

Student Council to sell flowers

Mancos High School Student Council is selling real carnations, real roses and sweet lip suckers for Valentine's Day as an annual fundraiser.

All proceeds will go to help fund the annual scholarship given to a graduating senior.

The prices are: carnations $1.50 each, roses $2.50 each, and sweep lip suckers for $1 each. Students and parents may purchase them from the high school and middle school offices, Mrs. Pearson in the elementary, or any Student Council member. The last day to purchase will be Friday, Feb. 6. All items will be delivered to students the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Sol' Emporium to play at Distillery

Sol' Emporium will play at the Mancos Valley Distillery, 116 N. Main St., Saturday, Jan. 31. Doors open at 5 p.m. and music starts at 6:30 p.m. Cover costs $3.

Sol' Emporium has a new look and a couple new members. The band, while made up of three young men, is a mix of classic and modern rock. On rhythm guitar and providing vocals is Aaron. Blake plays lead guitar, and TJ lays down the beat with the drums. They have played together for a couple of months but bring years of experience to the band.

Cost share provided weed mitigation

The La Plata Conservation District has been awarded a 2015 $25,000 grant to assist local landowners in performing weed abatement.

Partnering with the county which has agreed to provide management and oversight, the district program allows for a landowner to recoup up to 50 percent herbicide costs with a maximum $300 payment. The grant is limited to "List A and List B" weeds and requires active participation from the landowner to ensure spraying is done timely and properly.

Buy pizza, help local families

Mancos Pizza, located in the P&D Grocery Store, 280 Highway 160 West Frontage Road, will host a fundraiser Feb. 8 all day for two local families.

P&D Grocery owner Pete Loyd said that 50 percent of sales will be donated to the family of Hayden Kocourek, a local teenager who needs a kidney transplant and has had to travel back and forth between Denver, and Gary Baker, who is also experiencing medical problems.

There will also be a bake sale, and locals are encouraged to bring by baked goods or to buy some. Information: (970) 533-7932.
