Historical Society to meet Saturday
The Mancos Valley Historical Society will hold its regular meeting on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be hosted by Alice and Abe Saunders in their historical home, known as the Wrightsman House, located at 209 Bauer Ave., Mancos. The program for the meeting will feature the house, which was built in 1903. This unique house is one of the historical jewels of Mancos and has an interesting history of its own. All are welcome.

Ranger district plans to burn slash piles
The Dolores Ranger District plans to burn slash piles, beginning Monday, on the San Juan National Forest. Firefighters will ignite about 300 piles located off Fire Service Road No. 559 about seven miles north of Mancos in the Millwood area and about 30 piles off Fire Service Road No. 504 east of Dove Creek in the Doe Canyon area. Operations will continue through the week, weather permitting, from mid-mornings to mid-afternoons for optimum smoke dispersal.
No road or trail closures are expected.
Parent-teacher meetings set
Parent-teacher conferences for the middle school and high school are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 13, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students will be released at 1:41 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, and there will be no school for students on Friday, Feb. 14.
Parents of students in the middle school can start to call to schedule appointments with their students' teachers on Monday, Feb. 10.

The high school will be doing open conferences in the West Wing building and will not be scheduling appointments. Please stop by the West Wing during the conference hours to meet with your students' teachers as they are available.
Mercy plans free class about prediabetes
Mercy Regional Medical Center will offer a free class on how to manage prediabetes and help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes on Thursday.
People diagnosed with prediabetes are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Effectively managing prediabetes can help prevent diabetes. In fact, studies have shown that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes can be significantly reduced through weight loss and exercise, which have been shown to be more effective in managing prediabetes than medication alone.
Anyone identified as having prediabetes is invited to attend a free class by Sheena Carswell, CNS, BC-ADM, and Marge Morris, RD, CDE. The class will be held Thursday, Feb. 6, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in suite 140 of the medical office building at Mercy Regional Medical Center. This class is held the first Thursday of every month.
