Town board honors best-kept homes
The Mancos Town Board honored 431 Angel Way and Overlook Apartments as the best-kept residence and business at the Aug. 13 meeting. Both will receive $25 gift certificates for their outstanding landscaping.
Town selected nominees north of U.S. 160 and west of Colorado 184. The other business nominees included Country West Motel, The Valley Inn and Integrity Glass. The other homes considered were 416 Willow, 662 W. Sunset, 213 W. Menefee, and 403 Angel Way. In September, the board will honor the best-kept homes and businesses from Beech Street to Monte Street including the south side of Grand Avenue.
County offers help for uninsured

Valley Resources hosts grant-writing workshop
Mancos Valley Resources, a community support organization serving the Mancos Valley since 1995, will host an applied grant-writing workshop to be conducted by Clara A. Martinez, Ph.D., on Saturday Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A light lunch will be served. It costs $40 to participate in the workshop.
The workshop consists of addressing the common elements and selection criteria of private and public grant-making. Participants are required to identify and utilize a grant application they wish to prepare or review during the workshop in order to apply the principles of proposal writing toward an authentic and meaningful outcome.
Each participant will receive materials to prepare for the workshop so that their specific questions can be addressed before and throughout its duration.
The deadline for application is Sept. 19. Please provide an email address for Martinez to disseminate materials beforehand.

County offering free health screenings
The Montezuma County Public Health Department is offering free cholesterol screenings for residents of Montezuma and Dolores counties through their Colorado Heart Healthy Solutions program. Screening consists of a finger-stick blood sample, blood pressure reading, height and weight reading and guidelines for good cardiovascular health. Results are immediately available. Twelve-hour fasting is suggested. For an appointment, call 565-3056, ext 248.
Leo Kottke appearing in Telluride
The Palm Theatre will host Leo Kottke in concert on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014.
Telluride is Leo Kottke's second stop on his 18-city 2014 Tour. Doors open at 8 p.m.; concert, at 8:30 p.m.
Born in Georgia, and raised in 12 different states, Leo Kottke absorbed a variety of musical influences, flirting with both violin and trombone, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11. Since then, he has been entertaining audiences with his acoustic guitar for over 4 decades.

Valley Resources has new administrator
Mancos Valley Resources, a community support organization serving the Mancos Valley since 1995, has announced the selection of Liz Bohm as its part-time contract administrator.
Liz Bohm is MVR's first paid contractor. Until now, MVR's volunteer board has been handling operations and administration, but because of growing demand, it was time to bring on a new team member to expand capacity.
Sheriff's office will discuss violent predator
The Montezuma County Sheriff's Office will hold a community notification meeting regarding the release of a recently convicted sexually violent predator into the community. The meeting will be held at the Elks Lodge, 2100 North Dolores Road, Cortez on Aug. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. The identity of the predator will not be released until after the presentation.
Educational information will be presented by a team of professionals involved in the management of sex offenders in our community. The goal of this meeting is to enhance public safety and protection. This will be followed by a question-and answer-session.
Children are not allowed to attend the meeting.
