Man stabbed in neck north of Durango

SWAT teams respond to report of domestic violence
Powers-Crane

A Durango woman was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of stabbing a man in what is being described as an act of domestic violence.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call about 3 a.m. in the 33000 block of U.S. Highway 550, just north of Hermosa. Leland McQuiston, who left the scene, reported having been stabbed in the neck by Samantha Powers-Crane.

Deputies were unable to locate Powers-Crane that morning.

McQuiston had a restraining order against Powers-Crane, but it was unknown whether McQuiston had invited her onto the property.

At 11:40 a.m. Sunday, a SWAT team comprised of the Sheriff’s Office and Durango Police Department initiated a search warrant in 33000 block of Highway 550. SWAT teams had been called in because of previous criminal activity at the address, including fatal drug overdoses, wanted fugitives and assaults, said Chris Burke, spokesman with the Sheriff’s Office.

Powers-Crane was taken into custody and was being held Tuesday without bail. She is suspected of first-degree assault, violation of a protection order and domestic violence.

McQuiston was evaluated by paramedics but refused treatment for an open gash to his neck, Burke said.

He said the wound was serious enough that paramedics recommended he receive attention.

The incident remained under investigation as of Tuesday.
