Man in car chase is released from jail

Judge sets preliminary hearing
Dylan Mitchell

The man who led police on a chase near downtown Farmington, swerving in and out of traffic and nearly colliding head-on with other vehicles, was released from jail Monday after appearing in court before Magistrate Mark Steven Hawkinson.

Dylan Mitchell, 23, was taken into custody Friday afternoon after he crashed his Toyota Forerunner into a trailer at 19 Gooding Lane. No one was injured in the incident, but Mitchell will face several charges.

Mitchell was charged with aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, driving while under the influence of liquor, failing to show proof of insurance, improper display of registration plate, failure to maintain traffic lane, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

Farmington Police officers investigate a single vehicle that crashed into a trailer at 19 Gooding Lane. Dylan Mitchell, 23, reportedly drove the Toyota Forerunner into the trailer, after leading police on a chase.

All the charges are in connection to the Aug. 4 incident in which Mitchell reportedly drove erratically from the intersection of Pinon Hills Boulevard and College Drive to West 30th Street and then to La Plata Highway. He reportedly was weaving into oncoming traffic when he went south on the highway to Main Street and then continued until he turned onto Gooding Lane and crashed into the trailer.

He appeared incoherent at the time and was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center before being booked into the jail.

Mitchell also faces charges of resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, negligent use of deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon in connection to a March 13 incident.

A preliminary hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 23 in Magistrate Mark Steven Hawkinson’s courtroom.
