A man attempting to steal alcohol from Smith’s supermarket made things worse for himself when he reportedly offered a Farmington police officer an alcoholic beverage and then brawled with the officer before running.

Farmington Police were patrolling Smith’s, on East 20th Street, at 12:49 p.m. Tuesday when they were alerted to a possible shoplifter. The officer attempted to contact the suspect, Jeremiah Norman, 24, of Farmington, according to court records.

Norman reportedly “removed a can of Provisions Punch from his hoodie and offered it” to the officer, who tried to grab Norman’s wrist in an attempt to place him under arrest, according to the statement of probable cause.

Norman allegedly pulled away and “shoved” the officer and “began to wrestle with” him. The officer “pulled against his hoodie,” and they both fell to the floor. Norman reportedly backed up and his shirt and hoodie came off, leaving him shirtless, according to the statement of probable cause.

As the officer attempted to gain control, Norman allegedly used his hands to push the officer’s face away, and they “both went to the ground.” The officer continued to struggle with Norman, “but he was sweaty, and my grip slipped,” the officer said in the probable cause statement.

Norman managed to get away and reportedly ran across the parking lot toward North Dustin Avenue. He made it all the way to Laundratopia before two other police officials arrived and managed to arrest him.

Norman reportedly attempted to shoplift Svedka Blue Raspberry Vodka and Provisions Punch, which have a combined value of $27.87.

He was charged with a fourth-degree felony battery upon a peace officer, a misdemeanor resisting, evading and obstructing an officer, and a petty misdemeanor shoplifting. He was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center.
