Man allegedly kills brother with box cutter at home they shared

Orson Dickie charged with second-degree murder
Orson Dickie, 25, of Farmington is accused of killing his brother Payson Dickie, 27, with a box cutter.

A Farmington man allegedly killed his brother with a box cutter after a New Year’s Eve of drinking in their trailer.

Payson Dickie, 27, was found with “three lacerations to the face,” and according to the Office of the Medical Investigator, the “largest was located by the ear and up toward the temple,” where it reportedly “severed the temporal artery,” according to the affidavit for arrest warrant.

Orson Dickie, 25, reportedly admitted to police that he slashed his brother with a box cutter after a New Year’s Eve of “listening to music, playing video games and consuming whiskey,” the affidavit states.

Farmington Police were called to the home of Orson and Payson Dickie in the Alexander Trailer Park at 1124 Fairgrounds Road, where the two had lived as roommates for the past four years. It was the men’s sister, Rhiannon Dickie, who called the police at 8:30 a.m., after Orson reportedly told her he found Payson dead.

Detectives found “a copious amount of apparent blood on the sidewalk, staircase and door,” and they “discovered a body in the entry way as well as a trail of apparent blood in the entry way and down the hallway into the back bedroom,” according to the affidavit for arrest warrant.

An investigation of the scene led detectives to the alleged murder weapon, “a box cutter knife in the bedroom closest to the front door with what appeared to be blood located on the nightstand,” the affidavit states.

Detectives also reportedly found “several 99 brand single shot bottles in the trash can and marijuana smoking pipes on the kitchen counter” and “a lot of marijuana smoking pipes in the bedroom as well,” the affidavit states.

Orson reportedly told police he and his brother had spent Sunday afternoon with Dickie because they needed to shower at her house and get ready. When Rhiannon dropped them off at home they “started having a couple of drinks,” Orson said, according to the affidavit for arrest warrant.

When the neighbors were questioned, they reportedly told police “the two brothers who lived in Space 9 were known to be aggressive when they were intoxicated,” according to the affidavit.

Orson also reportedly told police that they “had an argument which ended with Payson walking outside.” Orson claimed he went to bed around 2 or 3 a.m. and when he awoke, he looked for Payson finding him “laying there facedown at the bottom of the stairs on the concrete,” the affidavit states.

“Orson said he couldn’t feel a pulse and tried to shake him, attempted chest compressions but knew Payson was gone,” the affidavit states. Orson also allegedly told police he brought his brother’s body inside and covered it with a blanket.

Police then, asked Orson about the fight he said he had with his brother. He alleged that it started with them “shoving each other,” resulting “in him being thrown on the ground.” Orson also reportedly stated that Payson “stepped on his throat and was crushing it,” the affidavit states.

Orson told police he reportedly grabbed the box cutter and pointed it toward Payson cutting him, but he insisted that Payson was the aggressor and “either passed out or ‘pretty much froze to death’” the affidavit states.

Orson also reportedly said “he wanted Payson to stop coming at him which was the reason he took the box cutter out,” according to the affidavit for arrest warrant.

Police stated in the affidavit that Orson did not have injuries consistent with being “strangled,” and “his eyes did not have any discoloration from popped blood vessels which is common when a person is strangled.” Orson also lacked injuries “indicative of a physical fight,” such as “bruising,” “scratch marks, swelling, etc.”

Orson also reportedly denied seeing blood in the home, but he did say “the gash” to Payson’s face “was pretty bad,” and he mentioned “how much blood there was” according to the affidavit for arrest warrant.

Police added in the affidavit that Orson’s “explanation and description of the fight doesn’t match the blood in the room.”

Orson Dickie was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center at 7:49 p.m. Jan. 1, according to jail records.
