M-CHS to hold lockdown drill and on-site evacuation

Drills allow district to evaluate and improve response skills
About 120 students from Montezuma-Cortez High School participated in a walkout Wednesday to honor those killed in recent school shootings in Florida and Aztec, New Mexico, and to promote a kinder school culture

In a letter to parents on March 16, Montezuma-Cortez High School Principal Dr. Jason Wayman, announced a school wide lockout drill and evacuation set for April 5.

The on-site evacuation doesn’t require parent pickup.

Wayman said the school has worked with the district safety committee to develop safety procedures, and the drills allow them to evaluate and improve response skills.

“The goals of drills throughout the school year are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries,” he said.

The team plans to evaluate the drill.

“When we debrief with students after the evacuation, we will show a Standard Response Protocol video that will be posted on our M-CHS webpage as well as our Facebook page for families and students to view,” he said.

Wayman encouraged parents to call with questions and talk with students about the drill.
