M-CHS set to stage ‘The Secret Garden’

Solid acting and impressive music render play a can’t-miss event

During the past year, the Montezuma-Cortez High School Theatre Department has staged Peter Pan, Clue, and a One Act Festival.

Much to the delight of drama fans, there is one more spectacular production in store.

Kicking off tonight at 7 p.m., Montezuma-Cortez High School students will treat audience members to a rousing rendition of The Secret Garden.

A classic plot

Sure to thrill audiences, the timeless classic tells the story of Mary Lennox (Anakay Hanold), a girl living in India, whose family and friends are killed by cholera.

Forced to take shelter in Great Britain with her uncle, Archibald Craven (Joshua Horneff), Lennox is thrust into an unfamiliar of life.

Sullen and depressed, Lennox eventually discovers a secret garden, makes a friend named Collin Craven (Sheldon Harris) and facilitates a family-wide healing process.

A story chronicling despair, healing and rebirth, The Secret Garden promises to thrill those lucky enough to attend.

Spectacular music

In addition to delighting dramatically inclined individuals, The Secret Garden will undoubtedly impress musically inclined individuals.

Actors and actresses will sing the vast majority of their lines while accompanied by nine student-musicians playing various instruments.

“The music this year has been a lot more difficult than it has been in the past,” explained base trombone player Xavier Eddy. “I’d say that it almost has a Celtic vibe.”

“This is the best music that we’ve ever done,” added Todd Underwood, who plays Neville Craven. “If we pull it off, it’s going to be really awesome.”

Outstanding acting, unique set

As is always the case with M-CHS Theatre Productions, impressive acting is sure to be a staple of the show.

Providing a backdrop for actors and actresses will be a unique set that includes a large sheet that divides half of the stage.

“We have a giant scrim that covers the entire back half of the stage,” said Joshua Horneff. “All of the ghost stuff takes place behind it.”

Due to its classic plot, spectacular music, outstanding acting and unique set, The Secret Gardenshould not be missed.

The play will take place at the Montezuma-Cortez High School theatre on March 21 at 7 p.m., March 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., April 1 at 2 p.m. and April 2 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
