M-CHS building support for first after-prom party

Montezuma-Cortez High School officials are calling for community support to host the school’s inaugural after-prom party on April 12.

Drama and English teacher Nicholaus Sandner is spearheading the party-style event to offer students a safe environment on prom night.

“We want to keep students out of trouble,” he said.

“So far we’ve had great feedback from teachers and the community members we’ve talked to,” Sandner added. “The students who know about it also seem excited.”

Sandner said he is soliciting the community to donate big-ticket items for a raffle and door prizes such as gift certificates to help entice students to the event. He said chaperones to help run various activities, including a casino, were also needed.

A similar program at Durango High School has been successful, and over the last 13 years, Durango officials have had only one alcohol related incident involving a student on prom night, Sandner said.

With strong parental involvement and community support, Sandner is hopeful to replicate the success here in Cortez
