The Canyons of the Ancients will host a holiday luminaria event Friday, Dec. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

It will start at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, 27501 Highway 184 in Dolores, and go to Escalante Pueblo. It is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.

According to Markleigh Swanson, executive director of Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance, said there will be about 1,000 luminaries.

“The event as a whole is community engagement to raise awareness for the monument and raise funds to help with our programming,” Swanson said.

After a lantern-lit walk along a path to Escalante Pueblo, attendees are invited to enjoy cookies, hot cocoa, music and a silent auction indoors. The auction will benefit the Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance.

The hike is about a half-mile uphill.

“The path can be icy, though it shouldn’t be too bad, but good walking shoes and dressing for warm weather are key,” Swanson said.
