Sheriff’s Office issues scam alert

The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert Tuesday. According to the department, a person identifying themselves as Deputy Morelli is calling local people and advising them that a warrant has been issued for their arrest for failure to show up for a court hearing. The person then gives the address of the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office. The caller then has been advising those that he calls that they must pay money or they will be arrested.

The Sheriff’s Office posted the warning on its Facebook Page, “It sounds very legit. It is not.”

“Once again this is not legit. The Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment in lieu of going to jail,” the department posted.

As of Wednesday, the Sheriffs Office was working to get the imposters shut down. The department was working on getting a court order in order to shut the caller down.
