In the market for a pair of Victorian ladies shoes or a 1940s gas station ticket writer? Antiques and collectible hunters in Cortez have their choice of Labor Day weekend sales and auctions this holiday weekend, where items range from the practical cast-iron donut maker to the fun 1960s Barbie carrying case with clothes and accessories.

The second annual Labor Day “Super Select” Antique Auction, put on by the ownership of Antique Corral in Cortez, is slated for Monday at 10 a.m. at the American Legion in Cortez.

Much like the items in Antique Corral, the Labor Day auction features a wide array of consigned era-spanning antique furniture, glassware, collectible toys and other historical items.

While the items up on the auction block have been selected by Antique Corral owner Cheryl Dean, they’re different items than what span her massive sales floor at the shop on South Broadway. Most of the what’s up for bid has either been consigned or are from one of the many Estate Sales Dean scours for new, interesting and valuable items.

Bidders at Monday’s antiques auction will have the chance to score everything from a Bachmann Piano to a mint condition Radio Flyer tricycle.

“I started this last year on Labor Day and had a lot of people come up. It turns out there are a lot of people who don’t go camping and want something to do on their day off,” said Cheryl Dean, owner of Antique Corral.

For those who don’t mind to do a little hunting, the annual Montelores Catholic Church Rummage Sale is also slated for this weekend. The massive sale on Montezuma Avenue, which features clothing, books, toys, appliances, kitchenware, tools and more, has been coordinated by volunteers and church members for the past six years or so. Since the beginning of August, volunteers have been sorting, organizing and pricing hundreds of merchandise as and have been setting up the sales floor in the courtyard of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church all week.

In addition to the Rummage Sale, there will also a silent auction for higher-end items and antiques on Saturday, said volunteer Susan Hanson.

“We’ve been getting donations in since August 1, and the generosity has been amazing,” said Hanson. “It’s become really popular in the community. People know about it and plan for it.”
